About Support After Suicide
Support After Suicide assists individuals of all ages, as well as families and communities, after the loss of a loved one to suicide. It provides free and confidential support, including support coordination and service navigation, peer support, counselling, support groups and online resources to help people through this difficult time.
What to expect
The Support After Suicide team are qualified mental health workers with experience in supporting people with their trauma and grief. The team also bring lived expertise in suicide bereavement. They will help support people to understand and manage the intense and complex feelings that can arise after losing someone to suicide.
Support can look like:
- Assistance with navigating challenges and adjusting to life after the loss of a loved one to suicide
- Peer support from someone with lived experience of bereavement by suicide
- Counselling tailored to your needs
- Support groups with others who have experienced a similar loss
- Practical assistance with appointments
Furthermore, support is flexible and tailored to the individual or family’s needs.
Accessing Support After Suicide
Support After Suicide is accessible via referral from clinical services, other support providers, general practitioners, family members and friends, or you can refer yourself.
What happens after the referral
The hours and days following the loss of a loved one to suicide are deeply challenging. Access to support is crucial during this period, which is why there is no waitlist for Support After Suicide.
Within two business days of receiving a referral, a dedicated Wellways team member will contact the person referred. Together, they will develop a personalised support plan based on the person’s needs, with support available for as long as it is required. The focus is on what matters most to the person, identifying the connections, resources, and supports that can help them move forward at their own pace.
Support After Suicide is proudly delivered by Wellways in partnership with Jesuit Social Services and funded by the Gippsland PHN through the Australian Government’s PHN Program.
