As the service provider, Wellways’ efforts have now shifted to working closely with participants to ensure they are connected to other psychosocial and mental health support services in the local area that meets their individual needs.

Established in 2023 under the Latrobe Health Assembly, The WES has provided a free, non-clinical, walk-in space where community members could connect with peer workers and receive compassionate support without referral or waitlists. In just two years, more than 1,000 people have accessed The WES for early intervention and emotional wellbeing support.

Wellways Director of Services Nikki Wynne said ” The decision to close the WES is regrettable and deeply disappointing to everyone involved, we pursued all possible funding options to keep this vital service open to the Latrobe community without success. Our focus is now ensuring that participants are safely connected to other local services so they can continue to receive the support they need.”

Wellways Regional Manager for Gippsland, Lee Brien, said the immediate priority is to support a smooth transition for both staff and participants.

“We know this news will be felt deeply by the community, our team, and everyone who has walked through the doors of The WES,” Ms Brien said.

“Our peer workers have created something incredibly special – a welcoming space that many people relied on for connection and understanding.”

“We remain deeply committed to the Gippsland community,” Ms Brien added.

While The WES is closing, Wellways’ dedication to accessible, person-centred, and community-led mental health support remains a key focus.
