Brainwaves is a weekly community radio show, produced and presented by people with a lived experience of mental health issues, either personally or as a family member or carer. Brainwaves airs on 3CR Community Radio each Wednesday from 5pm to 5.30pm. The program covers a wide range of topics relating to mental health, and regularly features special guests.
Brainwaves is an innovative and informative, completely peer-run program offering skills development, community connection and a way to give voice to people affected by mental health issues. Through our partnership with 3CR, the program raises awareness, challenges stigma and advocates around mental health issues.
The show covers a wide range of interests and issues—previous shows have explored topics like women’s mental health, early interventions for psychosis, legal rights for consumers, mental health in the media, stigma in the workplace, promoting community inclusion and music as a means to recovery. Guests have included Patrick McGorry, Neil Cole, Professor Helen Herrmann, Dr Mark Salzer and Professor Mike Slade.

In 2012, Brainwaves won the Excellence in Training Award by the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia. The Brainwaves team also won the Community Engagement award in the 2014 3CR Radio Awards.

Brainwaves is a team effort and there are lots of different ways to get involved, from research and script writing to, producing and presenting.
Our production team are the volunteers who deliver the show each Wednesday, They’re the ones who interview guests and undertake all the technical tasks on the day needed to put Brainwaves to air. You’ll need to complete 28 hours of training (five sessions on a Wednesday from 10am to 4pm), and one three-hour session on media law. After training, you’ll do four practice sessions before receiving your Certificate in Radio Broadcasting and committing to regular shifts.
Our creative team source talent, research topics, prepare interview questions and promote the show on social media. Training consists of two three-hour evening training sessions.
Brainwaves expects a minimum 12-month commitment from volunteers.
