Expanding carer services in response to the national carer strategy

In December 2024, the Department of Social Services released the National Carer Strategy and Action Plan, setting clear priorities to better recognise and support Australia’s three million unpaid carers. This created a timely opportunity for Wellways to expand the support we provide through the Carer Gateway.

In response, we moved quickly to strengthen access and inclusivity across our services. We launched Wanda , our mobile carer support service, bringing free face-to-face support directly to communities across the Blue Mountains and regional Queensland. We also established Carer Gateway Carer Hubs , co-designed with carers to create simple, locally connected pathways to holistic support.

Through strong partnerships with our strategic partners these new initiatives are making it easier for carers to get the right help at the right time, in line with the national strategy.

Connecting with carers over breakfast

Building on the success of last year’s event, Wellways hosted our second annual Carers Week Breakfast on the Sunshine Coast in October 2025, bringing together carers from across the region alongside partners including Little Dreamers, Arafmi Queensland, Carers Queensland, The Carers Foundation and The Parkinson’s Centre.

The event provided carers with a much-needed opportunity to pause, connect and recharge, while enjoying breakfast and hearing from keynote speakers Judy and Tim Sharp, creators of the world-renowned Laser Beak Man. With every seat taken, the event was fully booked, and demonstrated the value of creating dedicated spaces that recognise and support carers in our communities.
