Our purpose at Wellways is to connect people, strengthen families and transform communities for individuals of all ages experiencing disabilities or challenges to their social and emotional wellbeing.

On World Mental Health Day 2025, we have done precisely that through a new community event called Rural Voices, which brings together people from a region and connects them with the local team at Wellways and other partners and providers.

Hosted by comedian Dave Hughes and featuring guest speakers Leila McDougall, Wayne Schwass and Gunditjmara Elder Uncle Paul Wright, Rural Voices invited open, heartfelt conversations about mental health, resilience and belonging.

Through shared experiences, reflection and laughter, the morning reminded visitors that mental health is something we all play a part in. Every story told helps someone feel less alone and encourages others to speak up.

As one Warrnambool local shared, “You can be part of the community but also feel outside the community.” Events like Rural Voices help bridge that gap by creating spaces where people can come together, listen and feel understood.

Following the panel talk and audience questions, visitors were invited to a communal lunch and to enjoy an art exhibition celebrating artworks created by Wellways participants. Through art and a shared meal, many stories were told and connections made.

Away from the big cities, in Australia’s regional and remote areas, connection is even more vital to ensure people are in touch and have someone to share their story with.

Supported by the Victorian Government and alongside our partners South West Healthcare, Let’s Talk, Brophy, Meli, Headspace Warrnambool, and Lifeline, Wellways has helped break down stigma and build a culture of care and inclusion, not only this World Mental Health Day, but beyond.
