Sometimes life throws us some challenges we don’t know how to deal with. This program is for people aged 18 years and over, and aims to assist you in improving your individual wellbeing and build on your strengths and values to help you manage your life.
Together we will work towards achieving your optimal health. Wellways to Health is a self-management program that aims to improve individual wellbeing and build on people’s strengths and values.
It will help you to understand the factors that impact on your mental health and assist you in developing the skills you need to achieve and maintain a balance of physical, psychological and social health and wellbeing.

Wellways to Health, originally developed as the Optimal Health Program by St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and endorsed by Primary Health Tasmania, has been designed for people who are experiencing some difficulties in their lives that are causing them stress, perhaps leaving them feeling a bit anxious, or low.
Self-management programs are clinically proven to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life, while helping you develop the skills and confidence to:
- manage fatigue
- handle stress
- reduce depression
- communicate with doctors
- manage medications
- eat healthy
- be active
Wellways to Health (Optimal Health Program) is delivered to small groups of between 6-10 people and consists of eight modules delivered across a number of weeks.
In addition, participants can access Wellways Helpline, a free peer-support service designed to assist people in developing skills to obtain a balance of physical, emotional, social, spiritual, occupational and intellectual health. Helpline operates from 9am to 9pm Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) and offers support to stay engaged with primary care and other services and to develop an effective system of key community networks and natural supports.
The Wellways to Health program responds to individual needs and offers you the opportunity to have a conversation, to reflect, write down ideas, ask questions and develop plans to support your physical and emotional wellbeing.
The program will enable you to:
- reflect on your own wellbeing
- identify your strengths to maintain your wellbeing
- learn to recognise early warning signs of stress and develop partnerships with others as a strategy to optimise your health
- set and achieve goals and celebrate success at each step
- develop health plans, including strategies to maintain your wellbeing
Wellways to Health is available to adults (18 and over) and has been designed for people who are having difficulty in coping with aspects of their lives that are causing them some stress, anxiety, or leaving them feeling low.
It is ideal for people who are less able to pay fees for other psychological services and those unable to access other funded and private psychological services.
Entry to the program is via self-referral, referral from families and carers as well as from GPs, other health services and community services.
