Wellways Headway is a support service for people in North West Tasmania living with an acquired brain injury (ABI), as well as their families, friends and carers.
ABI refers to injuries that occur to the brain after birth as a result of accident, a stroke, alcohol and other drug misuse, or a range of diseases, for example Parkinson’s disease. The impacts vary from person to person but can include:
- cognitive and emotional changes
- short-term memory loss
- an adverse impact on behaviour
ABI can also be complicated by mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and psychosis.
People living with an ABI can need assistance with daily living, attaining employment, returning to study and engaging in recreation. Recovery can be a challenging process that also has significant impacts on families, friends and carers. They often see changes in their loved one’s behaviour and personality that are difficult to understand and accept. The symptoms are widely unrecognised in the community and therefore people with ABI can be easily misunderstood and become involved in the justice system.
Until recently, Headway North West Inc. was a stand-alone organisation based in North West Tasmania, but now joins Wellways as we assist Headway clients transitioning to the NDIS.
The Wellways Headway Acquired Brain Injury Program offers information, linkages, case management and capacity building for people experiencing ABI, as well as their families, friends and carers. It also assists clients to prepare for NDIS assessments as they become eligible over the next few years, and increases community awareness so people with ABI are better supported.
NDIS funding for this service is currently available for people aged 12 to 25. NDIS funding for people outside of this age range will be rolled out between now and 2019, as per the Tasmanian transition schedule. Wellways Headway can assist you to prepare for an NDIS assessment to ensure you maximise your support entitlements under the scheme.
