Anticipation is building for this year’s Midsumma Pride March on Sunday 29 January in St Kilda, as the Wellways Well Proud network gets ready to join the annual festivities. This is the third year that Well Proud has taken part in the Midsumma Pride March, as a joyous act of solidarity.

Well Proud is a network of Wellways staff and volunteers who identify as Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer and Asexual (GLBTIQA), as well as their friends, families and allies. They are passionate about supporting the mental health and wellbeing of GLBTIQA people.

Arthur, a volunteer with the Wellways Well Proud network, says: “I wasn’t ready to be part of the march itself last year, but this year I feel ready because I’ve grown wiser and stronger within myself. I’m excited to walk down the street holding a banner this year and making a difference—for myself, my friends and other GLBTIQA community members who can’t be there.”

Everyone is welcome to participate in Well Proud’s Midsumma activities on the day, starting with a picnic and banner-making from 12 to 1.30pm in the local park, to the Pride March itself at 2pm. For those interested in learning more about Well Proud, Arthur and others will be there to spark the Well Proud spirit.

“Being part of the Well Proud group has meant that I can be myself without feeling stigmatised or being put in a box,” says Arthur.

"This has meant a lot to me because in the past people have judged me based on my sexuality.”

He notes that Madonna’s music was important to him, through the years, as she helped him to feel okay about himself when he didn’t have support.

“Madonna is still important, but now Well Proud has helped me to find acceptance from a community that appreciates me,” he says.
