The Wellways Helpline is a free and confidential service producing mental health information, support and referral advice. Helpline volunteers are ‘peers’, people who have a lived experience of mental health issues. Volunteers can also be someone who cares for a family member or friend with mental health issues.
Helpline volunteers do not require previous counselling experience, but they need to be warm, genuine, open-minded and have good communication skills.
“Volunteers are key to the Helpline," says Elle Morrison, Helpline Coordinator.
"Alongside having a lived experience of mental health issues, they also have a genuine interest and care in wanting to work with people.”
Helpline will be conducting interviews for new volunteers in late August, with training commencing in September for five consecutive weeks on a Tuesday evening. For successful applicants, volunteer shifts run for a four-hour period (morning, afternoon or evening) over 12 months. Effective 7 August 2017, Helpline will be extending its hours from 9am to 9pm, Monday to Friday.
The Wellways award-winning Brainwaves 3CR Community Radio program, presented each Wednesday from 5 to 5.30pm, covers a wide range of topics related to mental health and regularly features special guests. The program is produced and presented by people with a lived experience of mental health issues, either personally or as a family member or carer. Volunteers are required to have a lived experience of mental health issues.
Brainwaves volunteers do not require previous media or journalism experience and receive training provided by 3CR community radio. Wellways is looking for Brainwaves volunteers who are confident, passionate about advocacy and want to utilise radio to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness.
Brainwaves will be conducting interviews in September, with training commencing in October for four consecutive weeks on a Wednesday.
