National Carers Week is an opportunity to recognise, celebrate, and raise awareness among all Australians about the diversity of Australia's carers and their caring roles.

National Carers Week, from October 10 - 16 2021, is a great opportunity to express our thanks and say “cheers” to the 2.65 million unpaid carers in Australia who do a remarkable job, who go above and beyond for the person they care for each and every day.

With 1 in 8 Australians caring for a family member or friend who needs support due to disability, age, mental ill health, or long-term physical illness, National Carers Week recognises the outstanding role that carers play in the community.

Our informal carers are an integral part and foundation of the health and community systems in Australia. Our 2.65 million unpaid carers are our mothers and fathers, grandparents, children, siblings, extended family and friends. Anyone can be a carer at any time, and any age.

They are the carers who provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who has a disability, mental health condition, chronic health condition, terminal illness, or is frail aged. Carers help with daily tasks such as emotional support, personal care or administering medicine.

This National Carers Week, Wellways Carer Gateway are encouraging Australians to show their support for all the hard work carers do and say ‘cheers to a carer in your life’.

Carers provide support and help with daily activities such as preparing meals, bathing, dressing, going to the toilet and taking medicine; as well as tasks such as banking, transport, shopping or housework.

Some carers provide care all the time, while some only provide care occasionally. Some carers, particularly young carers, may share their caring responsibilities with a family member or another person close to them.

Cares play a vital role in our community providing 2.2 billion hours of care in 2020.

Through the Carer Gateway services delivered throughout Queensland and the New South Wales regions of South West Sydney and Nepean Blue Mountains, carers have free access to counselling, support groups, practical assistance, carer coaching and emergency respite.

Carer Gateway services are designed for carers, by carers to help build skills and reduce strain ensuring they are in the best emotional space for their important caring role. Free support for carers is just a phone call away.
