Excitement is building for this year’s Midsumma Pride March on Sunday 28 January in St Kilda, as the Wellways Well Proud network gets ready to join the annual festivities. This is the fourth year that Well Proud has taken part in the Midsumma Pride March, as a joyous act of solidarity.
Well Proud is a network of Wellways staff, consumers, carers and volunteers who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, intersex, queer (LGBTIQ+) and other sexuality and gender diverse people, as well as their friends, families and allies. They are passionate about supporting the mental health and wellbeing of LGBTIQ+ people.
Arthur, a volunteer with the Wellways Well Proud network, says: “Taking part last year made me feel that I could be more myself and proud to be gay. I wasn’t judged as a gay man or a person with a mental illness. It made me feel more alive. I’m becoming more myself. I feel there is a future for me now. No more darkness.”
Everyone is welcome to join Well Proud for at the Midsumma Pride March, starting with a picnic from 1pm in a local park and joining the Pride March itself at 2pm.
Tara Smark, Wellways consultant consumer and carer participation says: “It was great to be involved as an ally in last year’s march. There is so much judgement of LGBTIQ+ community.
“It was wonderful to walk alongside my friends and colleagues to let them, and the wider community, know that they have my support. Last year’s debate about marriage equality was really tough for the LGBTIQ+ community. I look forward to taking part in Midsumma again this year to continue to support the equality of LGBTIQ+ people.”
