The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the most significant reform of disability services in a generation. It was designed to support a better life for hundreds of thousands of Australians living with a significant and permanent disability. The NDIS is expanding to support more people and Wellways is finding those with mental health issues are increasingly deemed ineligible for the scheme and are falling through gaps in the system.
Up to 91 per cent of people with a severe mental illness who currently receive disability supports will be ruled ineligible for the NDIS, creating an uncertain future for some of our community’s most vulnerable.
Wellways has been involved in the NDIS since its first trial in 2013. We now provide support services across the eastern seaboard, from Tasmania to Queensland, and we have developed unique programs aimed at filling emerging gaps.
As well as providing services to meet immediate needs, Wellways is working to create systemic change by advocating to all levels of government on behalf of those who are being left behind.
But we can’t do this without you.
Your support will ensure that Wellways can advocate to government while at the same time continue to provide vital programs like Out Together, Building Belonging and Helpline.
