This year’s Wellways Christmas Appeal supports our wonderful peer-led Helpline service, which is staffed by expertly trained volunteers handling thousands of calls each year.
Helpline volunteers, who have personal experience of mental health issues, are available to assist callers seeking service referral, advice and information about mental illness, treatment and recovery, and to support people when they are distressed, lonely or feeling isolated. Helpline is very often a source of hope in the midst of difficulties.
Since 2013, the number of calls to Helpline has increased by 71% and, now operating nationally, the service is expected to handle more than 6,500 calls in 2017. The need to train an additional 56 volunteers is crucial to ensure that Helpline can meet the increasing number of calls.
On a weekly basis, Helpline also offers a Scheduled Outreach Call Service to people experiencing mental health issues, to provide emotional support, social connection, peer mentorship and connections to appropriate services. This service, now handling 240 calls a month, has grown steadily since 2013 and is under pressure to meet the increasing demand for outreach calls.
