You can access the NDIS depending on your age, residency and disability.

  1. Age 
    You are under 65 years of age.
  2. Residency
    You live in Australia, and are an Australian citizen, or you have paperwork that give you permission to live in Australia permanently.
  3. Disability
    Your disability is likely to be with you for life and substantially impacts how you manage everyday activities. This means, you need help from other people or special equipment to do certain things.

What do you need to do?

If you are already using disability services and supports you will be contacted by the NDIS or a representative when it is time to move over to the NDIS.

  • Think about, ‘what supports you need that will lead to better life experience?’
  • This is not about looking back and looking at past supports you may, or may not have received.
  • Consider where you would like to be in the future and what supports you would need to get there.
  • Where do you visualise yourself in the short term and long term?

A clear vision about your future life will help you establish your goals.

You might want to engage someone to assist you with your journey.  Friends, family and health professionals are great resources that can help you.

Applying for the NDIS


Organise an Access Request Form

Contact the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and request an Access Request Form.

Gather evidence

Evidence of your disability to allow the NDIA to determine whether you meet the disability or early intervention requirements.

Your GP or specialist may need to complete part of the form, or you could use existing assessments and reports.

What support does the NDIS cover?

The NDIS fund reasonable and necessary supports. Your planner will discuss these with you.

To assess a person’s support needs, the NDIA may consider some aspects of a person’s life, such as:

  • Daily routine
  • Living arrangements

Supports may include:

  • Help with day to day living and activities that improves a person’s participation in the community and workforce.
  • A resource or piece of equipment such as wheelchair, assistive technology which are aids or equipment to assist participants to live independently or assist carers to support participants, home or car modifications to help you live the life you want.
  • Those that are helpful in building the skills a person needs to live they life they want, such as opportunities to work, further their education, volunteer or learn something new.
